The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, more commonly known as BAFTA announced the nominees for their award show today. Leading the group with ten nominations was Spielberg’s political drama Lincoln, followed by Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi both getting nine nods, and surprisingly in fourth place for the nominations is Skyfall. Yes Skyfall, the James Bond film.
Nominees for the Best Film nominees, include the aforementioned Lincoln, Les Misérables, and Life of Pi are Ben Affleck’s Argo and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. No surprises here. Seeing that I have yet to see Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty has yet to be releases stateside, I can’t make a fair judgement here, but Argo was one of the best films I have ever seen. That’s it.
Things begin to get strange in the Best Director category as Steven Spielberg was not one of the ten nominations Lincoln received. Also strange is Tom Hooper not getting a nod for Les Misérables. Instead Austrian director Michael Haneke received a nod for his art house “blockbuster” Amour, along with well-known directorsQuentin Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow, Ang Lee, and Ben Affleck. Colored me surprise to see Ang Lee receive the nomination over both Spielberg and Hooper.
No surprises again in Best Lead Actor with Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phenix and frontrunner Daniel Day-Lewis all got the well deserved nominations. A strange omission is John Hawke, who’s portrayal of a paralyzed man with polio in The Sessions had been compared to Day-Lewis in My Left Foot.
Best Lead Actress was a more diverse film group, with Emmanuelle Riva from Amour, Helen Mirren for Hitchcok, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook (boo nominate her for Hunger Games), Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty and Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone. I will bet that you, as is the case for me, are more familiar with the Lead Actor performances than those of the Lead Actress.
Favorite Tommy Lee Jones, Alan Arkin, Christoph Waltz, Javier Bardem, and Philip Seymour Hoffman received nods for Best Supporting Actor. Strange Waltz was picked over co-star Leonard DiCaprio, who in my honest opinion gave the better performance in Django Unchained. Best Supporting Actress nominees include Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, Helen Hunt and Judi Dench.
The BAFTA’s Awards along with the Golden Globes are perhaps the two best indicators for nominees and winners at the big game of The Academy Awards. And it just so happens that the Academy Awards nominations are tomorrow.
