Sometimes you hear the plot for the film and you can’t help but sadly laugh that it got green lighted. That was my original reaction to Warm Bodies. I laughed at this terrible Twilight knock off, just capitalizing on the current craze going on with teenagers and their vampires and zombies. Then I watched the trailer. The humor was there, and I somewhere deep down inside of me said that this may have a chance as a quirky comedy. Maybe it would make fun of the monster craze going on. Then I read that the Jonathan Levine, the genius director of 50/50,was the writer/director for Warm Bodies as well. Then I found out it was loosely based of Romeo & Juliet which actually put a damper on the situation. But luckily Simon Pegg gave nothing but praise for the novel it is base from. Hope was risen again.
Warm Bodies has everything in place to be a complete flop. If Jonathan Levine falls into the trap of trying to make an alternative to Twilight the film could be in trouble. If he focuses too much on making this a teen film, a dumb down romantic comedy that girls will go crazy for, the film is definitely in trouble.
But, it has an equal chance of being an amazing darker teen comedy. The fact that it has inspiration from the Bard all but solidifies that it will be dark humor. Adding the fact that zombie film satirist Simon Pegg gave the plot a thumbs up is all the better. If Levine and team make a film that is “a mesmerizing evolution of a classic contemporary myth” how Pegg describe the source novel they have a hit on their hands.
